Merritt B. Pound (1898-1970) was a longtime Georgia native and an alumnus of the University of Georgia. After he earned his Ph.D in History at the University of North Carolina, Dr. Pound returned to Athens and joined the UGA faculty where he taught History. In 1939, he became the first head of the Political Science department, a position he held for 25 years.
The collection consists of two copies of a partial typescript (cover, table of contents, and pages 1-41) of Merritt B. Pound's thesis titled The Public Career of Benjamin Hawkins. The thesis was submitted to faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1939 and centers on Benjamin Hawkins and Georgia history.
