Historical Note
Jesse Carl Mullis of Grady County, Georgia, served in the 4th Anti-Aircraft Battalion during World War I. He was the son of Jesse Richard and Ella Herndon Mullis, and husband of Bernice Williams.
Bernice Williams of Cairo, Georgia, was the daughter of Thomas Hendon and Lula Belle Ricks Williams. Her brother, Trafford Williams, was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of correspondence from J. Carl Mullis to Bernice Williams while serving in World War I. Mullis writes from Fort Monroe, Camp Eustis, and Camp Hill, Virginia; and France. Correspondence concerns Mullis's transfers, Mulberry Island, rumors, camp life, his views of the war, and attacks in Fort Montmorency. The collection also includes correspondence and newspaper clippings relating to the death of Trafford Williams, a Garrison cap and insignia, and genealogical materials from 1942-1965.
