Collection Description

Historical Note

The Old Athens Cemetery Foundation, Inc. was organized as a non-profit organization in 1981 to protect, preserve and maintain the oldest cemetery in Athens, located on Jackson Street on the University of Georgia campus. The foundation was the result of community concern about a possible parking deck being built on the site as well as the lack of interest by the university in its maintenance. The goals of the Foundation were met and the control of such activities was returned to the university in 2002.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of the papers of the Foundation including minutes; members lists; publications; incorporations and agreements; photos and slides; newspaper clippings; descendants correspondence; and general information concerning cemeteries and artifacts.
