Historical Note

Enoch Silsby was a commission merchant in Boston, Massachusetts. He seems to have primarily sold cotton. He did so during the antebellum period, as cotton became the dominant crop for many Southern states, entrenching slavery further in the region and helping lead up to the Civil War.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of business correspondence regarding the buying, selling, and shipping of cotton and other commodities mainly from merchants in Savannah (Ga.), Mobile (Ala.), and New York (N.Y.) to Boston, Massachusetts.
