William Tappan Thompson (1812-1882), author and journalist, of Georgia; wrote under pseudonym Major Joseph Jones.

The collection contains Thompson's correspondence during the time during which he served as editor of the Savannah Daily Morning News, personal correspondence to his wife Caroline while on business trips, business correspondence concerning his literary and journalistic career, notes and writings produced by Thompson including his first published novel, Major Jones' Courtship.
