Historical Note
The Branch family resided in Clarke, Oconee, and Greene counties. William Scott Branch received his land in the lottery, owning a plantation. The Branch family mainly resided in Oconee County from the mid-1800s to late 1900s.
The donor, Vivian Branch Phillips, worked as a librarian for the University of Georgia for 29 years, born in 1915 in Oconee County, Georgia in the house where she later lived with her husband, James W. Phillips, a farmer and former civilian employee with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Vivian's father, Otho M. Branch, was a cotton farmer who built Planters Gin Co. in Bishop, Georgia. His father, Marcellus L. Branch was also a farmer who developed and sold a variety of cotton called Branch's Long Shank Cotton.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of material relating to the Branch Family of Oconee County, Georgia and date from around 1836-1986. Papers relating to Vivian B. Phillips and her husband includes personal correspondence and farm business papers of her parents. Also included are church records, legal documents, photographs, scrapbooks, and other miscellaneous items. Of special note is a bill of sale of the property of William Scott Branch and includes a list of enslave people by name, purchaser, and price of each (See box 82, folder 2).

The Vivian Branch Phillips Collection was given to the University of Georgia Libraries in May 1987 by the Estate of Vivian Branch Phillips.
