Pat Conroy was a contemporary southern author who wrote several highly popular books, including The Water Is Wide, The Great Santini, The Lords of Discipline, The Prince of Tides, and Beach Music. For further information, see the article "Pat Conroy" in the New Georgia Encyclopedia.
James L. Townsend (d. 1981) was a magazine editor and wrote the book Dear Heart in 1980. The Townsend Prize for Fiction, which honors Georgia writers, was created in his honor.
The collection consists of a four-page typed manuscript with the header "for Dearheart, an introduction by Pat Conroy, transcribed 5-28-80, written about a month earlier."
