William Jones, businessman of Augusta, Columbus County, Georgia.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of the William Jones family of Augusta, Georgia from 1813-1910. Includes correspondence; account books, financial records, and receipts relating to Jones's cotton gin business (1833-1857); freedmen contracts; and legal papers relating to Jones's duties as executor of Marshall Keith's estate and guardian of the Keith children. The correspondence, mainly to William Jones, pertains to business matters, his guardianship of the Keith children, family matters, and the lives of enslaved people. Correspondents include Sarah Jane Jones Griffin, Arthur W. Jones, William H. Jones, and Sophie Jones. The early materials (1813-1863) pertain to the Isham Keith family and contain correspondence between Isham, Marshall, and Peter Keith.

From Cincinnati, Ohio. Thornton and Lucy (and others) send regards and news back to William Jones and others in Georgia. William Jones is a member of the Keith family by marriage. The Keith family are the former enslavers of Thornton and Lucy Keith, and other related people who relocated to southern Ohio after being manumitted or otherwise released from slavery

Amount of commissions is $586.70. Specifically names Minny Keith
Letter -- affidavit of Ishmael Keith, authorizing executors to sell his land in Georgia on his behalf, 1844 April 17
"Being desirous of concentrating all of my interest in the State where I reside, it is my wish that you, (the executors of my late owner Mr. M Keith decsd) would make titles to Mr. Wm Jones, or his representative, for all the land left to you in trust for me; being Two hundred [and] Seventy Six acres, lying on the east side of the Furies [?] Ferry road"
Letter -- from Edward (Old Ned) Keith to William Jones, 1844 April 20
"I have now a better opportunity of giving you further accounts of this Country than I had in other letter. This climate is two colde for me I wants to come back to Georgia again and bring my family if I could be permitted to return."Despite descriptions in this letter, Ned does not return Georgia
Letter -- Ishmael Keith to William Jones, 1844 August 10
Ishmael sends regards to the Jones family (and enslaved people of the plantation) in Georgia, describing his present circumstances and the circumstances of other Ohio Keith family members. "... the rainy season continued so long that the wheat crops has been cut short in our section of the country at least two thirds in other parts they estimate half crops in Indiana and the Northern parts of this state the crops will be an entire failure ... I shall therefore make Cincinnati my future home if I should be compelled to remain in this state."Mentions Minny, his mother [Nancy], and the health of Old Ned.Discusses financial business. "I shall conclude by asking you to remember my love to the Doctor and family like wise to all friends in part of the world both white and Black"

Discusses financial matters."I wanted you to have those notes that I left with you collected. If you has not collected them you will be so kind as to have them collected as early as you possibly can and to transmit it on to me as soon as you can and also the dividend that has been declared on our Bank Stock, and likewise what the balance you may have in your hands of mine after paying over Sister Minny's portion"

"Dear Sir, your favor of the first Containing a check on New York for 875 dollars and 68 3/4 cents was duly rcd on the 11. I am thankful to you for putting yourself to the trouble to collect those Notes"Again states desire to have more direct control of his bank stocks, beyond powers of the executors. "It is a Matter of importance to Me to know how or what the consequences would be relative to my Bank Stock if either or all of the [executors] were to die as I was subject to their Executor attorneys"
