Dr. Allyn M. Herrick was born in Syracuse, New York. He was a graduate of the University of New York at Syracuse and held a Ph.D. in forestry from the University of Michigan. He worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, Purdue University, and the University of Georgia, where he was an assistant professor from 1935-1937 and later served as Dean of the School of Forest Resources from 1957-1980. Lake Herrick at the University of Georgia is named in his honor.
The collection consists of papers of Dr. Allyn Marsh Herrick from 1963-1969. Included are two newsletters, correspondence, papers regarding projects of Forestry Sciences Laboratory, and pamphlets regarding Forestry Sciences Laboratory. Also included is a copy of a book presented to Herrick by faculty, staff, and colleagues of the University of Georgia, at his retirement dinner in 1980. The volume contains photographs of and congratulatory notes written by chief administrative officers of the University of Georgia, and the faculty and staff of the School of Forest Resources from that time.
