John Jones Gresham (1812-1891) was born in Burke County, Georgia. Gresham graduated from the University of Georgia in 1833, studied law under William T. Gould of Augusta, Georgia, and was admitted to the Georgia bar at Waynesboro in 1834.

The collection consists of two notebooks containing writings of John Jones Gresham. The larger volume contains orations delivered at exhibitions and events at the University of Georgia (1830-1833). Reversing the book, Gresham wrote Moot questions, notes, and accounts of money received and paid out (1835). The smaller volume includes Gresham's valedictory speech delivered at his graduation from the University of Georgia in 1833 (which is also included in the larger volume).
