John O. Fowell was a Savannah, Georgia native who contributed poetry to various newspapers during the Civil War period and afterward. Among the papers represented are the Savannah "Morning News", Macon "Southern Confederacy", Savannah "Daily Times", and Augusta "Constitutionalist".
The collection consists of one bound volume containing manuscript poems, some with corrections and in various versions, and newspaper clippings of his poetry. Several relate to Valentine's Day and most are love poems of varying degrees of sincerity.
