Abstract: The collection consists of papers of Robert S. Gilliam and the Gilliam family of Maxeys, Oglethorpe County, Georgia from 1870-1935. The bulk of the collection (1881-1909) consists of correspondence, financial statements, receipts, and legal documents pertaining to Gilliam's mercantile business. Family correspondence (1882-1898) consists of letters to and from Gilliam's daughter, Sallie Myrt while living in Maxeys or while she was attending LaGrange Female College. Other correspondents include Lucy Durham writing from Agnes Scott College (Decatur, Ga.) or Athens (Ga.) and Maude Williams. The collection also contains photographs, programs, and invitations relating to the LaGrange Female College. |
Robert S. Gilliam was a merchant who resided and worked in Maxeys in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was born in 1852 and died in 1903. He was married to Susan Maxey Gilliam (1856 - 1932). They had one child, a daughter, named Sallie Myrt Gilliam, who was born in 1877 and died in 1960. She married William Gurham (1869-1939), and they had two children, one in 1902 and the second in 1904. Sallie went to La Grange Female College in the 1890s.
