Collection Description

Scope and Content

The collection consists of correspondence of the Rhind, Stokes, and Gardner families from 1824-1889. The bulk of the collection contains correspondence addressed to Margaret Rhind Stokes of Augusta, then Louisville, Georgia. Letters are from her father, James Rhind, while working in Savannah, Georgia; sisters, Liza Rose and Susan Barrett; brother, William Montgomery Rhind, while serving in Virginia; and husband, William Anthony Stokes, while serving in and near Atlanta, Georgia, and then Savannah. The collection also includes correspondence from Brig. Gen. William M. Gardner to William Montgomery Rhind; and a letter from Alfred M. Hobby in San Antonio, Texas, which discusses life in the southwest.
