Alexander Stephens Clay (1853-1910), was Georgia legislator and U.S. Senator, born in Cobb County, Georgia near the town of Powder Springs. He graduated from Hiawassee College in Tennessee in 1875, subsequently studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1877, and started a practice in Marietta, Georgia. He began his political career as a member of the city council in 1880-1881, and became of member of the State house of representatives from 1884-1887 and 1889-1890; a member of the State senate from 1892-1894 serving as president; and was elected to the United States Senate in 1896 as a Democrat. He was reelected to the U.S. Senate in 1902 and again in 1908 and served until his death in Atlanta in November 1910. He is buried in the City Cemetery of Marietta, Georgia.
