Includes several manuscripts of Caldwell's works, both published and unpublished; a small amount of correspondence; scrapbooks of memorabilia from Caldwell and his wife Virginia's travels; newspaper clippings, magazine articles, photographs, and advertising ephemera pertaining to Caldwell and his writings; awards presented to Caldwell; and photographs. |
Historical Note
Erskine Caldwell (1903 – 1987) was an author who grew up in the American South. He is most famous for his novels Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre, which won him critical acclaim because of his writings about poverty, racism and social problems in the South. He became controversial among his fellow Southerners, however, because they felt like he was was deprecating the people and culture of the region.
