Cox Enterprises, owner of the Atlanta Journal and Constitution donated the channel 8 license to UGA for an educational television station. On May 23, WGTV began broadcasting out the the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. In 1965, WGTV merged with a group of four stations owned by the State Board of Education to form Georgia Educational Television, later known as Georgia Public Television and the forerunner to today's GPB televsion network. In 1982, ownership of the license was transferred from the University of Georgia to the Georgia Public Telecommunications Commission. WGTV is now a metro Atlanta station and the flagship for Georgia's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) state network.
This collection contains materials that were used by WGTV during the 1970s and 1980s. It also contains administrative files pertaining to the television station.

Through this collection is open for research, the audiovisual recordings are in their original format and do not have copies available for public use. One can make a request for a public use copy but the ability to convert an item is dependent upon the format and condition of the recording.
