The Demosthenian Literary Society was formed in 1803 by the first graduating class of the Franklin College, making it the oldest student organization at the University of Georgia.
Ambrose Homer Carmichael, Sr. (1886-1964) was born in Jackson, Butts County, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia from 1904 to 1907 and later became a broker in Atlanta, Georgia.
Judge E. C. Kontz, served as City Councilman, as well as auditor and recorder of the City of Atlanta.
This collection documents the achievements of Ambrose Homer Carmichael, Sr. (1886-1964) within the University of Georgia's Demosthenian Literary Society. Included is a speech orated by Carmichael. Also included is correspondence from University of Georgia Chancellor, Walter B. Hill, to Judge E.C. Kontz, inviting him to deliver prizes at a Sophomore debate.
