Alfred "Alf" Anderson played on the University of Georgia Freshman team in 1933 and is noted in the Pandora yearbook as one of the "most promising of the 1933 yearlings." The next year he graduated to the regular football team where he excelled as a halfback during the 1934, 1935 and 1936 seasons. In addition to football, Anderson was also a star on the University of Georgia baseball team where he played during the 1935, 1936 and 1937 seasons. In 1937 he served as both Captain and Shortstop. He was named as a Letterman for the teams in 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937. After graduation he played for several baseball tesms and in 1941 joined the Pittsburgh Pirates. Anderson played for them from 1941 to 1943 and later in 1946. He joined the Navy in 1944 and was stationed at the Jacksonville, Florida United States Naval Air Station where he played baseball. He retired from baseball in 1947 and he and his wife, Emily Garner Anderson, lived in Georgia until his death in 1985. His brother, Charles, was also an excellent athlete and played on the University of Georgia's football, basketball and baseball teams during the early 1940s.
The collection includes items of clothing dating from the 1930s. These are Alf's University of Georgia football jersey and Letterman's sweater, two University of Georgia Rat Caps and one cloth Flygirl hat that belonged to Emily Garner Anderson. Additional items of particular interest are the program from Alf's induction into the Dalton Education Foundation Hall of Fame, correspondence and football memorabilia dating from Charles time at the University of Georgia.
