John S. McElmurray, Sr. (1921-2010) was a lifelong resident of Hephzibah, Georgia who graduated from the University of Georgia in 1943. In the 1942-1943 academic year at UGA, he served as Second Lieutenant in Troop G of the Army ROTC's Cavalry Regiment.
The Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC, was established by the National Defense Act of 1916 and became official at the University of Georgia in 1919. During World War II, ROTC graduates, starting with the Class of 1940, began entering the service immediately after receiving their commissions.
The collection consists of items from the ROTC uniform of John S. McElmurray, including his hat, boots, epaulets, and insignias. One item unrelated to McElmurray's ROTC service, his rat cap, is also included.
