Collection Description
Historical Note
Rat caps are an old University of Georgia tradition dating back at least to the 1920s. Beginning at registration, freshmen were required to wear red and black caps with a "G" (for Georgia) or an "F" (for freshman). The hazing ritual at this time demanded that freshman always where their rat cap or they would get their head shaved. The caps could be removed if Georgia beat Georgia Tech in football. However, if not, they were to be worn until the winter break.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of seven rat caps previously owned by UGA alumni.
