The University of Georgia established the first business education program in the South when the School of Commerce was founded in 1912 by the state's Board of Regents. In its early years the program struggled to acquire faculty and funding to serve the several students who had declared their intention to pursue the new Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree. The first such degree was awarded in 1915 to Willis Brazeal Sparks.
The school became known as the College of Business Administration from 1940 until 1991, when it was renamed the C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business, honoring the late Herman Terry, and his wife, Mary Virginia, who as benefactors have endowed faculty chairs, research fellowships, scholarships, and funded facility upgrades.
Today Terry College offers undergraduate majors in accounting, economics, finance, international business, general business, management, management information systems, marketing, real estate, and risk management and insurance. Graduate programs include Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Accountacy (MAcc), Master of Internet Technology (MIT), Master of Marketing Research (MMR), a PhD in Business Administration, and a PhD in Economics.
The collection consists of photographs and slides from the 1990s, planning and self-study documents, admissions and enrollment data from the 1970s, files regarding former professor Barbara Carroll, Board of Overseers meeting minutes, and Advisory Board meeting minutes and agendas.
The collection also contains videos documenting Georgia Economic Outlook, the Terry Third Thursday speaker series, the Terry College Alumni Awards, and other events and programs related to the college.
Though the collection is open for research, the audiovisual recordings do not have reference copies; however, reference copies are available upon request. Audiovisual research requests are dependent upon the format and condition of the recordings.
