In the late-sixties, the student political structure of the University of Georgia campus consisted of two groups, the Greeks and the Independents. Students were not encouraged to vote for the most qualified candidate running for office in the Student Government Association (SGA), but to vote for those who were in the social category as the voter. Students who were not members of either the Greek or Independent party were essentially disenfranchised. In 1968, the United Party was formed to unite students from both sides of the social line separating the Greeks and the Independents. It was created to be a union of students who had different points of views. Although they might be from different social affiliations, they all shared a strong interest in student government.
This collection was donated by Carol V. Spring who ran as a member of the newly created United Party in 1968 and was elected Secretary of the Student Government Association (SGA) that year.
Carol V. Spring's papers consists of her two scrapbooks from 1968-1969, news clippings and brochures from 1966-1994 and an autobiographical sketch from 2016. The scrapbooks hold materials from Ms. Spring's college years at the University of Georgia with an emphasis on her connection to the Student Government Association's United Party. The news clippings and brochures are mostly from 1968-1969 and also have information about the United Party and her role as the SGA's Secretary for that time. In addition to this material, there is an article that she wrote in 1994 about the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and papers from a 1973 UGA conference entitled "The American woman-who will she be?"
