John Snow Shores was born on September 20, 1960 in Greenwood, SC, received his BA in English from Clemson University in 1982, and his Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia in 1986. Shortly after that, he joined the staff of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in their Editorial Services division.
For the next 22 years, Shores worked at the Georgia Center, where he rose to the position of Editorial and Production Manager, a position he held until his death on October 31, 2009. Because of his duties, his work spanned the full range of activities at the Georgia Center, and his records reflect that wide-ranging scope of both Shore's job responsibilities and personal interests, and most particularly those places where the two intersected.
The Georgia Center opened in 1957 with funding from a 1953 W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant and from the State of Georgia. In 1960, Georgia's first educational television station, WGTV, went on the air from the Georgia Center. The center also houses WUGA, the National Public Radio affiliate station in Athens.
The collection includes interoffice communications; Shore's work on various committees and task forces; materials and galleys for courses offered at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education; promotional materials; and an overview of programs. There are also internal management studies and documents relating to the hotel and conference/hospitality functions of the Center.
Though the collection is open for research, the audiovisual recordings do not have reference copies; however, reference copies are available upon request. Audiovisual research requests are dependent upon the format and condition of the recordings.
