The Athens branch of Learning in Retirement began in 1994 with a small group of community leaders who had an interest in expanding intellectual opportunities for older residents of the Athens metro area. The organization now has over 400 members and offers approximately 100 courses and activities per year. In February 2009, LIR received a grant of $100,000 from the Bernard Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the name was changed to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Georgia.
The papers document the activities of the Athens area Learning in Retirement organization from its inception in 1994 through its present incarnation as the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The collection includes minutes from Board of Directors meetings, newsletters, membership directories and photographs.
