Hubert Bond Owens was born in Canon, Georgia in the early years of the 20th century. He is considered a major influence on Landscape Architecture; establishing one of the nation's first programs in that field at the University of Georgia in 1928. In the late 1960s the department separated from the School of Ecology and, in 1969, Owens was named the first Dean of the School of Environmental Design. Upon his retirement in 1973, he became Dean Emeritus.
The collection consists of items which help document Owens' influence on landscape architecture during the 20th century and complements other Owens and School of Environmental Design materials found in University Archives. This collection includes drafts of Owens' Personal History of Landscape Architecture in the Last Sixty Years 1922-1982, photographs and slides depicting both his personal and professional activities along with numerous brochures, travel guides and newspaper articles.
