Collection Description
Historical Note
Hubert Bond Owens was born in Canon, Georgia in the early years of the 20th century. He is considered a major influence on landscape architecture; establishing one of the nation's first programs in that field at the University of Georgia in 1928. In the late 1960s the department separated from the School of Ecology and, in 1969, Owens was named the first Dean of the School of Environmental Design. In addition to serving as Dean, Owens also conducted a private practice in landscape design.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of files and plans, often done with his partner, fellow faculty member and noted landscaping specialist Brooks Wigginton, which document the development of post-World War II practices. Whether accompanying a modern or traditional structure, the plans often show a modern interest in making the yard a place of beauty and a center for entertaining. Of particular interest are the plans done for Cason Callaway in the development of Callaway Gardens.
