Between 1942 and 1945, the federal government designated the University as one of five U.S. Navy Pre-Flight training school in the United States. The program trained cadets in the skills needed as combat pilots in the Pacific theater and brought 2,000 students and another 200 instructor-officers to the campus for three-month training sessions. In the spring of 1943, William Barnett was one of the men ordered to officer training at the Navy Pre-flight School located on the University of Georgia campus.
This collection consists of a section of Commander William R. Barnett's manuscript U.S. Naval Air Station, Melbourne, Floridia, WW II,. The selection covers his time at the WWII era Navy Pre-Flight School located on the University of Georgia campus. In addition, there are copies of Barnett's Pre-Flight training records.
