Betty Jean Craige came to the University in 1973 after completing her Ph.D. at the University of Washington in comparative literature with a focus on Spanish literature. Her first position at UGA was as an instructor of comparative literature. Craige was promoted to professor in 1983 and was awarded the title of University Professor in 1995. In 1993, she became the director of the Humanities Center which was later renamed the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts. In 1996, Craige and Gary Bertsch received a nearly $1 million grant to found and direct the Delta Prize for Global Understanding, a prize awarded to people such as Desmond Tutu, Jimmy Carter and Mikhail Gorbachev. She has authored 17 books on such varied topics as literature, politics, ecology, art and her parrot, Cosmo. In addition, Craige curated two museum exhibitions of Spanish artist Alvar's work and her 2006 documentary titled Alvar Sunol: his vision and his art won first place in the short documentary category at the Indie Gathering film festival.
This collection has a number of Craige's essays along with information about the books that she wrote on a variety of topics including literature, politics, Alvar, Eugene Odum and her parrot Cosmo. There are brochures and photographs from The Delta Prize for Global Understanding (1999-2002, 2004-2009). The winners of this award include internationally known figures such as Desmond Tutu, Mikhail Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela. There are audiovisual materials documenting interview between Craige and Eugene Odum and others. There are also photographs of Craige with Art Rosenbaum standing in front of the mural that he painted at the Willson Center and of Alvar (Sunol) and her at his home in Spain.
This collection is arranged into three series: writings, The Delta Prize for Global Understanding and photographs.
