Collection Description

Historical Note

Walter Scott Brown was born on February 1, 1889 in Towns County, Georgia and died on December 5, 1965 in Athens, Georgia. Graduating from the University of Georgia in 1917 with a B.S.A. degree, he worked in some capacity of the agricultural field for more than 48 years, 37 of which were with the Cooperative Extension Service.

"Mr. Brown influenced the commissioners of 40 counties in southeast Georgia to join with the Extension Service in employing county agents. He became the third Director of Extension in [January] 1937. In the World War II era, he led the Extension Service into and through new program emphases of increasing rather than decreasing production. From the end of the war until his retirement in 1954, he directed Extensions' educational program to gear up for peace and use the flow of new technology to farms. He was named Progressive Farmer's Man of the Year, served as the first chairman of the National 4-H Foundation, chairman of the Georgia 4-H Foundation and chairman of the State Extension Directors, and chairman of the state Conservation Committee" http://www.caes.uga.edu/alumni/fame/brownw.html.

In 1983 he was posthumously inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Scope and Content

In 1942 during the early stages of World War II, Walter S. Brown, Director of the Georgia Cooperative Extension at the University of Georgia, sent out a letter stating "we are anxious to keep in close touch with all Extension Workers in the armed forces... I am asking you to send me your present address... [and] I would apprreciate your writing us a few paragraphs telling us of your particular duties and anything you think the other Extension men in the service and at home would like to hear about you.. We plan to send a letter regularly to every man in the service telling him something of what we are trying to do back home and of what all of your are doing for Victory in the armed forces."

The Walter S. Brown Scrapbook of World War II containes a compilation of the newsletters sent out by Brown and the responses he received from the servicemen and women during the course of the war. Brown's newsletters are dated October 6, 1942 to November 29, 1944 and the letters sent to Mr. Brown date from 1942 to 1945. The newsletters detail activities taking place here at UGA while the letters make reference to the various countries where the servicemen were stationed as well as observations of personal activites and,in some instances, the countries' agricultural land, products and methods.

Organization and Arrangement

Letters and newsletters have been separated from the scrapbook. The detached materials in box 2 are ordered by newsletters (folder 1) grouped letters in the scrapbook in alpha order (folders 2-52), and loose letters found in the scrapbook filed in alpha order (folders 53-61).
