Abstract: The Francis H. Herrick Materials Related to Dean Rusk consist of reports, conference materials, and newspaper clippings related to Dean Rusk that were collected by Francis H. Herrick between 1946 and 1994. Herrick was a colleague of Rusk's at Mills College, Oakland, California, in the 1930s and 1940s and a longtime friend. |
Francis H. Herrick was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1900. Herrick earned a B.A. in history from Case Western University, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. from Yale University. He also attended Oxford University for three years as a Rhodes Scholar.
In 1926, Herrick began his career as a professor of history at Mills College in Oakland, California, where he taught for forty years. While at Mills College, Herrick was appointed to the first Lynn T. White Professorship and served as chair of the Division of Social Sciences. Herrick's tenure at Mills College overlapped with that of Dean Rusk, who was Associate Professor of Government and Dean of Faculty from 1934 to 1940.
After retiring from Mills College in 1966, Herrick was appointed executive secretary of the Western College Association (now Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and was actively involved in the accreditation of colleges and universities. After retiring from this position, Herrick moved to Carmel, California and served as president of the Carmal Citizens' Committee and of the Board of Trustees of the Harrison Memorial Library.
Herrick was married to Marian White Herrick and together they had three children, Charles Herrick, Meg Ford, and Mariam (Mipsy) Melendez. Francis Herrick died in Carmel, California on August 10, 1996.
The Francis H.
