Abstract: Don Schanche, Jr. is a journalist who has written for many Georgia newspapers. His papers document his investigative work on state hospitals and his coverage of disability issues throughout the state. |
Don Schanche, Jr. is an alumnus of the University of Georgia. He graduated in 1979 and began working as a journalist for The Augusta Chronicle. He has worked for the Macon Telegraph, The Union-Recorder of Milledgeville, and most recently, The Associated Press in Atlanta. While serving as a Milledgeville correspondent for The Telegraph in 1982, Schanche was assigned to cover Central State Hospital, which housed about 3,000 patients and residents. His work with Central State Hospital led to his interest in disabilities issues. Schanche now serves as a copy editor for the Associated Press and continues his interest in those issues.
The Don Schanche, Jr. Papers contain research notes, promotional literature, other materials related to state hospitals, and copies of Schanche's investigative reports. The papers contain research for an investigative series on Central State Hospital, published in 1986, and later disability rights reports on Medicaid and the Olmstead decision.
The papers are arranged chronologically.
Collection is open for research.
