Collection Description

Historical Note

Dottie Adams began her career in the late 1970s and has worked as a mental health care advocate and for support organizations for over thirty years. Her career spanned many different roles as an advocate, mentor, and direct support professional. She has helped run group homes, provided education and training to other support groups, and directly helped individuals and families navigate service systems. In the 1980s, Adams was an early advocate for an important new development in support services- that of person-centered planning and family supports, which focused on providing services to people based on their individual needs instead of what institutional or system services provided. Dottie Adams helped create new programs like the Early Intervention Babies Can't Wait initiative that focused on early screening and diagnostic testing for infants. She helped found Georgia Options and was tapped to help the state close Rivers Crossing, an Athens institutional home in 1996. In 2002, Adams moved to the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities to work full time as the Director of Individual and Family Supports.

Scope and Content

The Dottie Adams Papers relate to her work as a mental health care advocate and document her work with many support organizations in Georgia and nationally. Her papers include correspondence, reports, newsletters, resource guides, training manuals, articles, project proposals, and committee materials related to disability advocacy and professional work.

Organization and Arrangement

The papers are arranged into four series: Series I. Work Files, Series II. Conferences, Series III. Resource Guides and Manuals, and Series IV. Professional Literature.
