Collection Description
Biographical Note
Carlene Friedrichsen (Cardee) Kilpatrick was born October 22, 1939, in Sonoma County, California. She earned a B.A. in Spanish from Pomona College (Claremont, California) and an M.A. in Education from Stanford University.
From 1979 to 1984, Kilpatrick served on the Clarke County Board of Education, with one term as Vice President (1981-1983). In 1986, she won her first campaign for Athens City Council, in Ward 2, against incumbent Jerry Nicholson. With the consolidation of the Athens and Clarke County governments in 1990, she successfully ran for County Commissioner, District 7, and served until 1994, when she chose not to seek re-election. Kilpatrick returned to politics in the 1996 campaign for County Commissioner, District 10, where she served until her loss in the Democratic primary run-off in 2004. During her tenure on the city council and county commission, she held the position of Mayor Pro Tem and sat on the Industrial Development and Economic Development Authorities. When Athens-Clarke County Mayor Gwen O'Looney resigned to take another position, Kilpatrick served as mayor from November 4, 1998 until January 5, 1999, when Doc Eldridge took office.
Kilpatrick was a member of the charter Leadership Athens class in 1982 and has served on the boards of the Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau, Piedmont College, Classic Center Cultural Foundation, Talmage Terrace/Lanier Gardens retirement community and Athens Community Council on Aging. In 1991, the Foundation for Excellence in Public Education (Clarke County, Georgia) established the Cardee Kilpatrick Chair for Middle School Teachers. Having been one of the founders of the organization, Kilpatrick served as executive director, a volunteer position, beginning in 1984, and implemented its "Teacher of Excellence Award."
Kilpatrick resides in Athens, Georgia, with her husband, Jeremy, a professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Georgia. They have two sons.
