Biographical Note
Jacob Louis Goldstein was born in 1923 to Abe and Celia Goldstein in Milledgeville, Georgia. He attended Georgia Military High School and Georgia Military Junior College, and he graduated from the University of Georgia with a BBA degree. He married Maxine Shapiro Goldstein in 1947, and the couple had two children, Marcia and Harriet. During World War II, Goldstein served four years as a captain in Patton's Third Army. During his tenure, he received two Bronze Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Goldstein worked with the department store and wholesale business, C. Goldstein and Sons, for more than 60 years and served as president. Throughout his career, he held several chairman and board positions, including on the Board of First Federal Savings and Loan of Milledgeville, BB&T Bank Board, and Temple Beth Israel in Macon, Georgia.
Goldstein remained active with Georgia Military College throughout his life, serving on the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association. For his and Maxine's legacy gift and ongoing support, they were honored with the naming of the Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts in 2005.He was a past member of the Baldwin County Industrial Authority and the Democratic State Committee and a past director of the Georgia Association of Democratic County Chairs. He was involved with several charitable campaigns and helped found Harriet's Closet, an organization that provides items for cancer patients undergoing treatment, in tribute to his daughter.
Goldstein died on January 11, 2013, at age 89.
