Abstract: The Erwin C. Surrency Collection of Political Materials consists of political campaign materials collected by Surrency over the course of his career as law librarian and professor at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and, later at the University of Georgia. It covers the years 1946-1964 and includes printed materials, handbooks, press releases, news clippings, bumper stickers, buttons, and pamphlets. Materials document Democratic and Republican Party campaigns at the national level and the Pennsylvania state or local level including Adlai Stevenson's 1952 presidential campaign and the 1964 "Republicans for Johnson" presidential campaign. Georgia national and state materials mainly pertain to Mrs. Jesse W. Jenkins' 1950 gubernatorial campaign. Also includes AFL-CIO political education materials (1950-1954, 1964).

Collection Description

Biographical Note

Erwin Campbell Surrency was born in Jesup, Georgia on May 11, 1924 to H.W. and Mary (Campbell) Surrency. In September of 1945 he married Ida E. Winn. They had two children, Robert Erwin and Ellen Gwinn.

Surrency attended North Georgia College from 1940 to 1941, received his A.B. from the University of Georgia in 1947, his LL. B in 1948, and M.A. in 1949. In 1950 he was awarded his Masters in Library Science from George Peabody University. From 1950 to 1978 Surrency was the Law librarian at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also was professor of law at Temple University from 1951 to 1972. In 1972 he was appointed assistant dean and law librarian at Temple and held this position until 1978. In 1979, he moved to Athens, Georgia to take the post of law librarian and professor of law at the University of Georgia. Surrency retired in 1995.

Surrency was visiting professor at Queen's University at the University of Belfast in Northern Ireland from 1963 to 1964, was library consultant for the American Bar Foundation from 1953 to 1954, and acted as a consultant for the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies from 1975 to 1976. Surrency is author of The Marshall Reader (with Carrol C. Moreland) published in 1955, Research in Pennsylvania Law, two editions published in 1953 and 1965, and A History of Federal Courts published in 1987. He was the editor of the 1989 edition of the History of American Legal Literature and editor of the American Journal of Legal History, 1957.

Scope and Content

The Erwin Surrency Collection consists of political campaign materials collected by Surrency over the course of his career as law librarian and professor at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and, later at the University of Georgia. The years represented by these items are 1946 to 1964. Most of the information consists of Democratic and Republican Party campaign materials for national, state, and local political campaigns. Much of the literature at the local and state level is from Pennsylvania, with a smattering of material from Georgia. The types of material included in this collection of political propaganda are voting handbooks, candidate information, party platforms, campaign memorabilia, letters, clippings, campaign speeches, press releases, campaign essays, and photographs.

Organization and Arrangement

The collection encompasses one series, Political, which is divided into three subseries: A. General File, B. Georgia, and C. Photographs. The types of material included in this collection of political campaign materials are voting handbooks, candidate information, party platforms, campaign memorabilia, letters, clippings, campaign speeches, press releases, and campaign essays. The original order of the collection has been maintained.

This subseries consists mainly of Democratic and Republican Party campaign material for national, state, and local political campaigns. Voting handbooks, candidate information, party platforms, letters, clippings, campaign speeches and press releases, and election propaganda are included. Much of the material at the local and state level is from Pennsylvania . Adlai Stevenson's 1952 run for the presidency is highlighted. AFL - CIO political education materials can be found dating from 1950 to 1954 and 1964. Also of interest is the "Republicans for Johnson" campaign data from 1964. This series also includes twenty copies of Democratic Digest dating from June 1955 to November 1956.

This subseries consists of campaign essays and printed material from several state and national elections. Mrs. Jessie W. Jenkins's race for governor of Georgia in 1950 and a campaign pamphlet from Tom Linder's bid for governor of Georgia in 1954 can be found. Several pamphlets generated by the Georgia Republican Party on Thomas E. Dewey's 1948 campaign for president are also included. This subseries also includes charts on the organization of Georgia state government 1964 and 1971, 1972 and calendars of 1976 election events.
