Cyprian Porter Willcox diaries
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteCyprian Porter Willcox (1822-1897), born in Sparta, Georgia, was an educator at the University of Georgia (Athens, Ga.) from 1872-1897. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of two diaries of Cyprian Porter Willcox. Entries dating July-September 1848 discuss the French Revolution of 1848; the succeeding Republic government; and military and political issues of Prussia, Germany, Italy and the United States, including slavery. Part of the volume outlines the history of the United States, including the founding of the original colonies and the revolution of 1776. Entries dating April 1852-September 1854 detail Willcox's trip through Europe, including travels in Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, and Switzerland. He discusses time spent in cities and regions including Valencia, Madrid, Cadiz, and Granada, Spain; Marseilles and Paris, France; Munich, Berlin, and Augsburg, Germany; and Copenhagen, Denmark. Entries for the various cities and regions vary in concentration and detail, but often include observations on architecture, the characteristics of the area, accommodations, weather, food, and people. The entry for Madrid includes a lengthy discourse on a bullfight Willcox attended. The second diary contains an inscription, "My father's book of travels in Europe as a young man, Athens, March 19, 1933."
