Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteAurelius W. Gibson was a Confederate Major with Company K of the 45th Georgia Infantry Regiment. Captured at Petersburg, Virginia, March 1865, he was held at Fort Delaware, Delaware. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of one letter: dated United States Military Prison, Fort Delaware, Delaware, June 17, 1865, "To His Excellency Andrew Johnson, President of the United States," signed "Aurelius W. Gibson, Major 45th Georgia Regiment and Prisoner of War." In the letter, Gibson takes the oath of allegiance to the United States, and requests a pardon.
