Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteA Gradual is a liturgical book containing the choral parts of the Mass. It belongs logically together with the sacramentary and lectionary. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of an illuminated 16th century parchment Spanish manuscript of the Gradual of the Roman Catholic liturgy. The manuscript is richly illuminated throughout the text with particular emphasis on the first capital letter which is executed in gold and pastel colors. Many of the remaining capital letters of the manuscript are of a red and blue Moorish design while the verse letters are black with yellow trim. A portion of the Kyriale and Sanctorale sections are palimpsest, that is erased and reused, with some of the old notation still visible. The manuscript is bound in tooled leather fastened to wooden boards with ornamental brass plates and knobs on back and front covers.
