Scope and ContentA letter from Mary Kinsland to Joshua Kinsland dated August 11, 1863. The letter describes life at home during the Civil War. In the letter, Mary Kinsland states, "We have mity dry weather hear ..." and gangs of men are going about pressing cattle, they "take pore peoples cattle as well as the rich." She hasn't sold the "brandie" yet, but "some sayes thear is talk of men coming round to pressing brandie and jist giving 3 dollars a gallon." She thinks she could probably sell it first at $5 a quart "write soon and tell me what you think would be the best to do with it..." "the baby has not grood much since you have bin gone it has bin mity puney this summer and is yet." "...let us know whither thear us any chance of you getting a furlow..."
