Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThe collection consists of papers of the Thomas Jones family of Thomas County, Georgia from 1819-1889. Thomas Jones' papers include lists of taxable property (slaves, land, livestock, and equipment); indentures; and receipts for the purchase of slaves (names of enslaved people include Adam, a carpenter, Charles, Randal, John, Betsy, Nancy, Abram, Ann, Eliza, Sam, Ned, Bob, Lucy, Cherry, Nelson, Charlott, Robert, Lindy, and Mary). Letters are from Henry Francis Jones to his sister, and between Edwin T. Davis and Mattie Davis; and regard battles, military strategy, and military life. Papers of E.T. Davis concern Davis's military services, and include diary entries with regard to his service with the Dixie Boys of Company A, 57th Georgia Infantry Regiment. The collection also includes plats, indentures, and writs regarding land in Georgia, mainly Irwin and Thomas counties, and a portrait of Thomas Jones.
