Collection Description

Historical Note

The Wayfarer was a modern passion play, a religious work combining drama, opera, pageant, and oratorio written by J.E. Crowther. Directed by Laurence H. Rich and presented by the Interchurch World Movement of North America, The Wayfarer premiered at Columbus, Ohio, June 28-July 13, 1919 as part of the Methodist Centenary Missionary Exposition. The play was later presented at Madison Square Garden, New York from December 15, 1919 - January 15, 1920.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of materials pertaining to the production of the passion play The Wayfarer from 1919-1920 and includes the playbook of director Lawrence H. Rich containing autographs of performers, a typed program, sheet music, and hand written notes on stage directions, sound effects, and lighting. A scrapbook contains photographs of Walter Hampden, Blanche Yurka, Helen Newitt, Theo Karle, and scenes of the pageant; clippings; a poster; programs; and brochures relating to The Wayfarer. The collection also includes a booklet of the musical score and photographs, probably from D.W. Griffin's unreleased film production of The Wayfarer.
