Collection DescriptionHistorical NotePatrick Hues Mell (1814-1888) was born in Liberty County, Georgia. Mell was a Baptist preacher, college professor, president of the Southern Baptist Convention (1863-1871, 1880-1887) and Chancellor of the University of Georgia from 1878-1888. Scope and ContentThis collection contains letters, letterbooks, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, letters from Civil War soldiers, rosters of Confederate Military companies, reports, articles and sermons. Material covers personal as well as official papers of Chancellor Mell. The 1977 addition includes letters pertaining to the removal of Mercer University from Penfield and other educational information as well as letter from Henry D.
