James Longstreet letter to Robert Custer
Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJames Longstreet (1821-1904) graduated from West Point in 1842, and served in the Mexican War. He was appointed Brigadier General in 1861, and was promoted to Major General in the same year. Following his promotion Longstreet commanded a division of six brigades–the nucleus of what would eventually become the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia.
