Historical Note

The Knight family lived in Lowndes County, Georgia. Jesse C. Knight (1831-1862) was with Company D (Valdosta Guards), 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Mathew A. Knight was also with Company D (Valdosta Guards), 50th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Mary A. Knight (1832-1902) was married to Jesse C. Knight.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of papers of the Knight family of Lowndes County, Georgia. The bulk of the collection contains correspondences from Jesse C. Knight to Mary A. Knight, from Richmond and Winchester, Virginia, and Chatham County, Georgia (1862-1863). Also included are correspondences from Mathew A. Knight, Thomas J. Knight, E. P. Davis and Solomon Walker. Correspondents write from locations near Orange Courthouse, Fredericks Hall and Guiney Station, Virginia, and Savannah, Georgia; about family matters, weather, rumors, and positions.
