Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteMalthus Augustus Whitworth Ward (1794-1863) was a physician, educator, botanist, and horticulturist born in New Hampshire. Ward eventually moved to Athens, Georgia, where he was Director of the University of Georgia Botanical Garden from 1831-1842. The notebooks contain lectures on medicine, physiology, chemistry, and botany; notes on surgery, drugs and dentition, manners and mores, horticulture, and botany; plans of gardens; and descriptions of plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers.
