Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteJohn Watrous Beckwith (1831-1890) was an Episcopal minister and the second Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia (1831-1890). He lived and preached in Maryland, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Atlanta, Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of the sermons of John W. Beckwith from 1853-1890. Handwritten sermons include the title, scripture referenced, and a listing of location and date of delivery. The collection also includes a "memoriam" about Beckwith adapted by the Perlee Club, May 18, 1891, with portions translated by J.F. Adams; an editorial to the Birmingham Magazine regarding Archbishop Parker; an essay on the history of the English Church; and several fragments and untitled sermons. Organization and ArrangementOrganized into three series: Series 1. Sermons; Series 2. Articles, Fragments, and Memorial; and Series 3. Untitled Sermons. Series 1. Sermons is arranged in alphabetical order by title of the sermon. Series 2. Articles, Fragments, and Memorial is roughly sorted by type. Series 3. Untitled Sermons is arranged in alphabetical order by the first word in first line on piece.
