Collection Description

Historical Note

Isaac S. Vincent (1806-1861) was a Captain in the 1st Regiment of Georgia Volunteers stationed at Cedar Town, Georgia. He helped oversee the removal of the Cherokees in 1838. He commanded the Clarke County Rifles at the beginning of the Civil War and was Clarke County's first casualty killed in action. He is buried locally at the Oconee Hill Cemetery.

Scope and Content

This collection includes photographs, correspondence, albums, and genealogical information regarding the Jackson, Chapple, and Vincent families, items included were collected in relation to the Matthews family ancestry. It includes correspondence from Isaac Vincent during the Cherokee removal, and the muster roll from the Clarke County Rifles from 1861 with updates on casualties through the Civil War.
