Collection Description

Historical Note

Freddy Wittop was a costume designer, dancer, and college professor. He was born Frederick Wittop Koning on July 26, 1911 in the Netherlands. He apprenticed with a designer at the Brussels Opera and began his career in 1931 at Folies Bergère and other music halls in Paris. He also began a professional dance career under the name Frederico Rey at this time. Wittop would go on to design costumes for the Ice Capades, Broadway musicals, films, and nightclubs in New York City and would win the 1964 Tony Award for "Hello Dolly!". Afer retiring in 1973, Wittop held a position as an adjunct professor in the school of drama at the University of Georgia.

Scope and Content

This collection contains two letters, an autographed photograph, and four costume designs by Freddy Wittop.
