Collection DescriptionScope and ContentThe collection consists of correspondence written between 1961 and 1963 discussing the spelling of Elijah Clarke's last name, as well as the spelling of Clarke County, the Georgia county named for him. Correspondents include Garland Peyton (Director, Department of Mines, Mining and Geology of Georgia), Pat Bryant (Deputy Surveyor General, Georgia Surveyor General Department, Office of the Secretary of State), Richard N. Fickett, III (Athens Historical Society, President), Lillian M. Hawes (Georgia Historical Society, Savannah). Correspondents included photocopies of pages from Georgia's Official and Statistical Register (1957-1958), Acts of the General Assembly of Georgia (1801), and an extract from "Origin of the name of Clark's Hill," a typescript by Tilden B.
