Collection DescriptionHistorical NoteDr. Erwin James Eldridge (1833-1902) was a surgeon with 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment, and then Cobb's Legion, serving in Virginia and then in Atlanta and Macon, Georgia, during the Civil War. He married Emma Ronaldson. He resided in Flat Pond (Lee County) and then Americus (Sumter County), Georgia. Scope and ContentThe collection consists of fourteen handwritten letters between Dr. E. J. Eldridge and his wife, Emma, while he served as a surgeon with the 16th Georgia Infantry Regiment and later with Cobb's Legion from 1861-1865. His letters tell of his duties, provide descriptions of battles, and document his health. Emma's letters discuss family and political issues. Also included are fifty-seven photocopies of letters, nineteen loose envelopes, and two photographs of the Eldridges.
